Nyandiwa calls Italy: Italy answers!

Harambee Tales: The girl who married a Parrot
"Ukitaka cha mvunguni sharti uiname" - " If you want something under the bed, you have to bend over" (Swahili proverb)

The girl who married a parrot

This Ebook of Harambee Tales is very important for the Harambee project: it aims to disseminate knowledge of the Luo’s culture, who settled on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kenya. The publication of The Girl who married a Parrot is a collaboration between Gwassi schools and those in the Italian region (in the 'Education Exchange'), sent by prof. Maurice Ogalo, which until a few years ago he was Director of Kiwa Primary School and currently Director of Nyandiwa Teachers Training College. The tale was explained by 5th Class of Basiglio Primary School (Milan-Italy), with drawings made with the collage technique and the different types of materials (scraps of paper, fabrics, glitter and cardboard), then transformed into Ebook with the help of teachers Carla Paolillo and Loredana Gatta.

Many fairy tales have characters like the African animals: this story instead mix animals and people, that lead us to discover the way of thinking and traditions of the Luo people. The story highlights the value of "diversity" and reminds us that we should not ever stop at the mere appearance. Very often the appearance is deceptive, as in the case of the Parrot protagonist of the story: you can hide behind the diversity of incredible wealth and fortune, which only a sensitive soul can see and enjoy!
